ALWAGHT- Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that Doha has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to place all Israeli nuclear facilities under the agency’s inspection and regulation.
At a UN atomic agency session, Qatar's Ambassador to the United Nations, Jassim Yacoub al-Hammadi, called on Israel to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and urged international bodies to ensure all Israeli nuclear facilities are subject to IAEA safeguards. He emphasized the need for the international community to uphold its commitments under various UN resolutions, including those from the UN Security Council, General Assembly, and IAEA, which have called for Israel to submit its nuclear facilities to inspections.
Hammadi also stressed the importance of intensifying global efforts to have Israel join the NPT as a non-nuclear state, noting that all other Middle Eastern countries, except Israel, are parties to the treaty and have safeguard agreements with the IAEA. Israel is believed to possess 200 to 400 nuclear warheads but has refused IAEA inspections or to sign the NPT. He also criticized Israel's ongoing aggressive policies, including actions against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, and the blockade of humanitarian aid.
In addition, Hammadi highlighted that Qatar submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) requesting an advisory opinion on Israel's obligations regarding UN activities and the protection of international organizations in Palestinian territories. He called for Israel to allow UN agencies and humanitarian groups to operate freely in occupied territories, protect their assets, and abide by international resolutions. Finally, he urged the international community to take firm actions to ensure Israel's compliance and to support Palestinians' rights to self-determination and an independent state.
