Alwaght- Syrian president Bashar al-Assad on Thursday stressed the importance of continuing cooperation and coordination with Russia at all levels, especially in countering terrorism and in the political and economic framework.
Assad made the remarks in Damascus when he received United Russia Party delegation headed by State Duma member Dmitry Sablin.
Talks discussed the Syrian-Russian relations and efforts exerted to further develop them in various fields.
President al-Assad made it clear that pressures and policies pursued by some Western countries against Russia with every victory being achieved against terrorists in Syria are the best evidence that the terrorist war waged against the Syrian people is no longer limited to Syria only and this underlines the importance of cementing the Syrian-Russian relations at this important stage of the region’s history.
The Russian delegation, in turn, confirmed the importance of joint action between Moscow and Damascus to counter schemes of some Western countries which continue to seek to destabilize, weaken and fragment countries that differ with them.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.
Russia has been conducting air raids against ISIS and other terrorist groups inside Syria at the Damascus government’s request since September 2015.
On the contrary, the US and its allies back militants fighting to topple the Syrian government. American warplanes have been bombing Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate, which has seriously damaged the country's infrastructure.
The airstrikes have on many occasions resulted in civilian casualties and failed to fulfill their declared aim of countering terrorism.
