ALWAGHT- President Masoud Pezeshkian praised the Iraqi prime minister for the smooth and successful parliamentary elections, describing them as a “major achievement” that elevates the prestige of the “brotherly Arab nation.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, expressed hope that ties between Tehran and Baghdad would further deepen in the coming term. He praised Iraq’s electoral process as a reflection of the nation’s commitment to democratic values, while al-Sudani thanked him for the warm congratulations, noting the long-standing bonds between the two countries.
Al-Sudani highlighted that the latest parliamentary vote was Iraq’s sixth since 2003, emphasizing its transparency, calm atmosphere, and strong nationwide participation. He pointed to the highest voter turnout since 2015 as a sign of renewed public trust in the political system and reaffirmed the Iraqi people’s dedication to their evolving democratic experience.
The prime minister also stressed that the election results would support Iraq’s ongoing development and progress, reaffirming his intention to expand regional and bilateral cooperation with Iran. Initial results showed his Reconstruction and Change coalition leading with 1.3 million votes, and he described the 56 percent turnout as clear evidence of regained confidence in Iraq’s political trajectory.
