ALWAGHT- Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, warned that triggering the snapback mechanism would be seen as a confrontational step and would be met with a calibrated response from Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei rejected any justification for invoking the snapback mechanism, calling it legally, politically, and ethically baseless. Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, he said the mechanism is being misused as a political tool, despite being rooted in UN Security Council Resolution 2231. He stressed that Iran remains a signatory to the NPT and only reduced its JCPOA commitments in response to violations by the other parties, particularly the European trio—Britain, France, and Germany.
Baghaei emphasized that Iran continues to engage with the E3 to protect its national interests but blamed them for failing to uphold their obligations under the JCPOA. He argued that if the European countries had met their commitments, Iran would not have scaled back its own. Resorting to the snapback mechanism, he said, signals that Europe has abandoned its role in diplomatic efforts related to Iran’s nuclear program.
Turning to broader international issues, Baghaei criticized Germany’s support for Israel's military actions against Iran, calling it a violation of international law. He accused Germany of hypocrisy for hosting US nuclear weapons while criticizing Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, and condemned the IAEA’s silence on Western violations while disproportionately targeting Iran. Germany, he added, bears responsibility for backing Israeli aggression, which he labeled a breach of global legal norms.
