Alwaght- An Egyptian court sentenced ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison without parole on Tuesday over the killing of demonstrators in 2012. Morsi also faces charges in two other trials.
The sentence was issued during a brief hearing in a police academy in of Cairo. Morsi along with 12 senior leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, including senior figures Mohamed el-Beltagy and Essam el-Erian, were the defendants of the case. The sentencing was broadcast live on Egyptian state TV.
Morsi was acquitted of a murder charge, and the Judge, Ahmed Youssef, found him guilty of showing of force against protesters and unlawful detentions.
The country’s first freely elected president, Morsi took power after the 2011 overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Morsi himself was ousted by the army in 2013 and put on trial as the new regime of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi launched a relentless crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood.
Hundreds of Brotherhood members have since been sentenced to death and thousands more jailed.
