Yemen Peace Talks Delayed, Saudi Regime Continues Truce Violations

Yemen Peace Talks Delayed, Saudi Regime Continues Truce Violations

Alwaght- Talks aimed at ending more than a year of a Saudi-led aggression on  Yemen have been delayed, as Ansarullah movement representatives objected to continued ceasefire violations by the Saudis.

Delegations representing the Ansarullah movement and the party of a former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, have yet to depart for the talks.

They cited heavy fighting and Saudi-led air operations as the reason for the delay in heading to the talks, which were to be held in Kuwait. "There's no point in going ... if there's no respect for the ceasefire," a senior official in Saleh's General People's Congress party told the Reuters news agency on Monday. For his part, UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed announced that the talks have been delayed.

"Due to developments over the last few hours, the start of the Yemeni-Yemeni peace negotiations scheduled to begin today... in Kuwait, will be delayed," the envoy said in a statement, without specifying when they might take place.

Earlier on Monday, Ansarullah sources told al-Manar TV that the two parties were holding a meeting in bid to decide on going to Kuwait for talks aimed at ending over a year of Saudi-led intervention in Yemen. The sources added that Ansarullah and the GPC had firmly refused to receive the paper handed by UN Yemen Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, stressing that the acceptance of such paper is considered as surrender. “The solution could be just through setting an inclusive agenda,” the sources said, stressing that Ansarullah join the peace talks if the Saudi-led aggression was not stopped.

In a recent letter to the UN envoy, Ansarullah said that the Saudi-led aggression has not stopped using all the kinds of weapons to commit crimes against the Yemenis in different areas.

The letter added that such violations are unhelpful to warring parties trying to find the suitable circumstances to engage in dialogue needed to restore peace to Yemen. The letter noted that the UN must be responsible regarding all the parties who impede concluding a national agreement in the country.

On April 7, Ansarullah movement announced a ceasefire in several border regions with Saudi Arabia.

The truce was announced by the UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as a step to calm the situation ahead of negotiations between the warring sides scheduled to be held in Kuwait on April 18.

Saudi Arabia has been waging a war on Yemen since late March 2015 in a bid to reinstate fugitive ex-president Abdul Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and undermine the Ansarullah movement, which took over after Hadi resigned.

Over 9,500 Yemenis, including 4,000 women and children, have lost their lives in the Saudi-led brutal military campaign.
