Alwaght- Sheikh Ali Salman, Bahraini opposition leader, will appear before an appeals court in Bahrain on Monday after one and a half year on his detention.
Bahraini opposition leader is facing malicious charges related to public speeches he delivered and in which he called for political reform through democratic transition and an end to human rights violations.
Alwefaq website reported that Monday’s hearing session is the fourth in the appeals court. International human rights NGOs have said the trial lacked the standards of a fair one.
The United Nations’ Human Rights Commissioner, the United States Secretary of State as well as world parliamentarians and human rights watchdogs have all called on the Bahraini Authorities to drop the charges against Sheikh Salam and end the trial.
He was detained on December 28, 2014, on trumped-up charges of attempting to overthrow the ruling Al Khalifah regime and collaboration with foreign powers.
Sheikh Salman has strongly denied the charges, emphasizing that he has been seeking reforms in the kingdom through peaceful means.
In June 2015, a Bahraini court sentenced Salman to four years in prison on charges such as insulting the Bahraini Interior Ministry and inciting others to break the law. He was acquitted of seeking regime change.
For several times thousands of Bahrainis staged anti-regime protests across the country in solidarity with jailed Islamic scholar on the eve of his trial.
The protesters took to the streets and called for the release of Sheikh Salman as well as all political activists behind bars.
