ALWAGHT- Addressing the UN General Assembly, Iran’s president said Tehran would not surrender, reaffirmed the country’s right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program, and urged greater emphasis on diplomacy and justice for the Palestinian people.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN General Assembly that Tehran would not yield to US pressure, while remaining open to diplomacy and negotiations. His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump threatened Iran and called for its economic isolation.
Pezeshkian rejected accusations that Iran is a source of regional instability, saying Tehran has acted in self-defense. He accused the US and Israel of targeting Iranian civilians and infrastructure and also highlighted the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where he said tens of thousands had been killed and displaced.
On Iran’s nuclear program, Pezeshkian reaffirmed Tehran’s stated right to peaceful nuclear technology for medicine, agriculture, industry, and electricity. He said Iran does not seek nuclear weapons but would not accept restrictions on its peaceful nuclear activities.
The Iranian president also called for justice for Palestinians, arguing that lasting peace in West Asia cannot be achieved without addressing occupation, aggression, and displacement. He further advocated regional cooperation and said security in the region should be addressed by neighboring countries rather than outside powers.
Pezeshkian said Iran remains prepared for dialogue but would reject negotiations conducted under military or political coercion. His remarks came as Iranian and US officials communicated indirectly through mediators on the sidelines of the UNGA, amid heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and the broader conflict.
