ALWAGHT- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says any agreement reached with Oman would not automatically result in the Strait of Hormuz being reopened, as Tehran maintains that the United States must first resume its obligations under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said upcoming talks with Oman will address a proposed new maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that any agreement with Oman would not by itself lead to the reopening of the waterway.
Araghchi said Iran's condition for reopening the strait is for the United States to return to its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. He also said regional countries should take responsibility for maintaining security and stability in the region.
The talks come as Iran and Oman negotiate arrangements for safer commercial navigation, including a temporary joint maritime corridor and mine-clearance efforts. A regional meeting involving Iran, Iraq and other Persian Gulf states is expected to discuss the initiative and broader regional security.
