Israel Conducts New Illegal Raid on Civilian Aid Ships in International Waters

ALWAGHT- Israeli naval forces violently hijacked the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters Monday—a predictable act of high-seas piracy.

Israeli Shayetet 13 commandos ambushed the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian convoy of over 50 vessels carrying humanitarian supplies, doctors, and journalists from 70 countries, approximately 250 nautical miles from Gaza in international waters. The assault began around 07:20 GMT when Israeli warships encircled the fleet, focusing initial aggression on the Turkish vessel Munki before launching a forceful boarding operation. Troops systematically smashed onboard cameras and deployed electronic warfare to jam communications, obscuring the reality of the raid.

Despite the peaceful posture of unarmed volunteers, Israeli forces used brutal physical violence—kicking, beating, and dragging participants across decks with their hands bound. Many activists sustained serious injuries including broken noses and fractured ribs, while soldiers opened fire to terrorize the crew. Approximately 100 international participants were abducted and held in a makeshift floating prison before being transported to the port of Ashdod for interrogation by Israeli intelligence. Among those detained is reportedly Dr. Margaret Connolly, sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly.

Flotilla legal co-leader Bader al-Noaimi emphasized that because the attack occurred in international waters, regional authorities are legally obligated under UNCLOS to respond to distress calls. The international backlash was swift, with Turkey condemning the raid and French and Spanish lawmakers denouncing what they called the normalization of maritime terrorism. The hijacking is part of Israel's broader policy to enforce the total blockade of Gaza, restricting aid to less than ten percent of survival requirements. The author concludes that such brutality only strengthens international resolve to break the siege.
