ALWAGHT- The death toll from a powerful explosion at Shahid Rajaei Port in Iran’s southwestern city of Bandar Abbas has risen to over 40, with more than 1,000 individuals reported injured.
The director general of Hormozgan’s crisis management organization, Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, confirmed on Monday that the explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port has claimed 46 lives. Out of the injured, 1,072 have been discharged from medical care, while 138 remain hospitalized. Despite the tragedy, port operations resumed normally by Sunday morning to avoid disruptions to freight and logistics.
Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, tasked by President Masoud Pezeshkian to oversee the response, announced that an investigation into the cause of the blast is underway. He emphasized that accountability will be ensured and praised the swift response of rescue and firefighting teams. First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref reaffirmed the government's commitment to transparently share the findings with the public.
Emergency services, including 50 relief and medical teams and 31 helicopter missions, were deployed to manage the situation. In a show of national solidarity, the Iranian cabinet declared Monday a day of mourning to honor the victims of the disaster.
