Iran Supports the PKK Leader’s Call for Disbandment

ALWAGHT- The Iranian Foreign Ministry welcomed a call from Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), for the group to disarm, dissolve, and bring an end to its decades-long conflict with the Turkish state.

In a statement on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei expressed support for the PKK leader’s call for disarmament. He described the decision as a significant step toward renouncing violence. Baghaei emphasized that Iran welcomes any effort to end terrorism and enhance security in neighboring Turkey, hoping the development will have positive implications for the region.

In a historic message from prison, Abdullah Ocalan urged the PKK to hold a congress and decide to lay down its arms and dissolve the group. The message, delivered by officials from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM Party, is part of a new initiative aimed at ending the decades-long conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

The PKK, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its Western allies, has waged a prolonged rebellion against the Turkish state.
