Alwaght- Armour-piercing ammunition containing depleted uranium is to be sent to Ukraine in a new package of military assistance from the US.
It will be accompanied by Abrams tanks, which are expected to be delivered in the next few weeks, the Reuters news agency reported.
This information was confirmed to reporters by two US officials. The news agency said it has also seen a relevant document.
The munitions, which could assist in the destruction of Russian tanks, are part of a new military aid package for Ukraine that will be announced next week.
According to a source familiar with the matter, US Abrams tanks that can fire the ammunition are due to be supplied to Ukraine in the coming weeks.
One of the sources said the upcoming aid package could range in value from US$240 million to US$375 million, depending on what is included.
Britain sent such internationally banned ammunition to Ukraine earlier this year, saying it will make a difference to the battle, but in practice it made no chance.
The Western countries have an experience of using such ammunition in their wars in Iraq and Syria.
What is depleted uranium?
Depleted uranium is a radioactive material that is used in a variety of military applications, including armor-piercing shells and tank ammunition. It is denser than lead and has a high melting point, making it ideal for penetrating armor.
When depleted uranium hits a target, it can cause a shower of fragments, which can be lethal to personnel in the immediate vicinity. The material can also release radiation, which can pose a health risk to soldiers and civilians.
