Iraq’s New PM in Tehran to Hold Key Bilateral, Regional Talks

Alwaght- The Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani who is in Iran for talks on bilateral relations met with the Iranian Supreme Leader Sayed Ali Khamenei.

This is Al-Sudani's third foreign trip as PM since he took office in October.

He arrived in Iran on Tuesday and met with Iranian officials, including the President Sayed Ibrahim Raisi.

He then went to meet the Leader, who congratulated on his election as PM.

The Leader described al-Sudani as a competent person and his assumption of the post brings back hope to Iran's neighbor.

The Leader suggested that one of the pivotal needs of Iraq is national unity to reach a position it deserves.

“Another victory necessity for Iraq is maximum use of young and motivated youths,” the Leader told the PM.

The leader also pointed to the “enemies” of Iraq's progress.

“Indeed, the progress of Iraq has enemies who may not show hostility on the surface, but they do not accept a government like yours, and you must rely on the people and motivated and young forces who have passed their test in confronting the great and deadly danger of ISIS, and stand against the enemy,” Ayatollah Khamenei held.

The Leader also referred to the agreements reached by the two countries under Al-Sudani's predecessors, saying that they were not fully realized and hoped that they find their way to realization under the new PM.

For his part, al-Sudani pointed to the strategic relations between the two countries, saying that the obvious example was the war against ISIS terrorist organization.

The Iraqi PM also honored Iran's General Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi comrade Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis— who were assassination at Baghdad International Airport by the US in 2020—, saying that these two figures were a showcase of Iranian-Iraqi unity.

The PM also highlighted his government's resolution to boost all-out ties, especially in economic and security sectors, with Tehran.

“According to our constitution, we would not allow any side to endanger other countries’ security using Iraqi territories,” he told the Leader.
