Alwaght- Several US Muslim groups have jointly sued Myanmar dictator Thein Sein and other government officials for alleged crimes against the Rohingya minority, which they say amounts to genocide.
The complaint, filed Thursday in New York, asks the court to issue summonses to Sein, Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin and other officials under the US Alien Tort Statute, which has been used in the past by foreign citizens seeking damages from human rights violations committed outside the United States.
The suit alleges the Rohingya "are primary targets of hate crimes and discrimination amounting to genocide fueled by extremist nationalist Buddhist monks and Thein Sein government."
The plaintiffs include the Burma Task Force, a coalition of 19 Muslim groups, and a member of the Rohingya community.
Myanmar authorities have barred Muslim candidates from participating in the upcoming general election.
Myanmar election officials have released the final list of candidates to stand in a highly anticipated general election on Nov. 8.
The Burmese government as well as the Buddhist majority refuses to recognize the term “Rohingya”, referring to them as “Bengalis”.
Rights groups have accused the Burmese security forces of killing, raping and arresting Rohingya Muslims.
Between 2012 and 2013, Buddhists mob attacks have left thousands of Rohingya Muslims killed and evicted more than 140,000 from their homes.
The violence has displaced nearly 29,000 people, more than 97 % of whom are Rohingya Muslims, according to the United Nations.
Myanmar denies citizenship to most of Rohingya population in the country, placing restrictions.
According to the United Nations (UN), Rohingya Muslims are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.
