Alwaght- Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says the key to solving the current refugee crisis in Europe lies in seriously combating terrorism.
President Rouhani made the remarks on Sunday in Tehran at a meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders.
Speaking about the developments in the region and the need to cooperation in solving the issues, Rouhani said: “Today, the Middle East is facing a lot of issues which have been imposed from outside of the region”. He also added: “Terrorism should not be looked at as being merely our region’s problem; it should be seen as a global problem and global resolve is needed to confront it”.
Referring to the refuges crisis in Europe Rouhani said: “The solution to this problem is seriously combating terrorism.”
For his part, Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said combating terrorism seriously is important and it entails social, political, and military aspects, said Koenders, adding: “I hope that this very complicated issue will be solved by close cooperation with Iran and a serious resolve from the part of other countries”.
The remarks by the Iranian president come amidst an unprecedented inflow of refugees mainly from war-wracked countries to Europe.
The UN has predicted a dramatic increase in the number of refugees heading for Europe. "In 2015, the UNHCR anticipates that approximately 400,000 new arrivals will seek international protection in Europe via the Mediterranean. In 2016, this number could reach 450,000 or more.”
