Alwaght-The Lebanese security forces have arrested the fugitive terrorist Ahmad al-Assir at Beirut International Airport.
Security officials say Ahmed al-Assir was detained on Saturday at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport as he was trying to flee the country in a disguise and using a forged passport.
Security sources added that Assir, who had shaved his beard, was trying to fly to Egypt.
Assir fled justice in June 2013, after deadly clashes against the Lebanese army in Abra region in the southern city of Sidon.
Lebanese authorities say he is an extremist Takfiri preacher who used Abra mosque as a cover for his terrorist activities. The Army stormed the mosque and found a warehouse of heavy and medium ammunitions inside it.
The fugitive extremist continued to encourage sectarian strife in the country by issuing audio statements while in hiding, calling on people to join the ranks of Takfiri terrorists in neighboring Syria.
In 2014, a Lebanese military judge urged the country’s prosecutors to hand down the death penalty to 54 Takfiris, including Assir and notorious extremist singer Fadel Shaker.
Assir and his Takfiri supporters “formed armed groups that attacked an institution of the state, the army, killed officers and soldiers, took explosive materials and light and heavy weapons and used them against the army,” the judge said.
Lebanese security forces are still looking for fugitive terrorist Fadel Shaker who was a key player in Abra clashes.
