82 Percent of Germans Back Merkel Saying US Unreliable

Alwaght- A new poll shows that over 80 percent of Germans believe the US is not a reliable partner for their country, echoing Angel Merkel's remarks who said "The times when we could rely entirely on one another have partly become a thing of the past,” in an apparent reference to the US.

The survey, commissioned by public service TV provider ZDF, found that 82 percent of Germans believe the US is not a reliable partner, with only 14 percent believing it is. The remaining four percent were unsure.

In June 2017, after President Donald Trump had announced during the recent G7 meeting in Sicily that he would pull the US out of Paris climate agreement, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, “The times when we could rely entirely on one another have partly become a thing of the past,” adding Europeans would have to take their fate into their own hands.

In May 2018, after Donald Trump announced the Washington withdraw from another international agreement, Iran nuclear deal, the German leader reiterated her stance on the US and said “It’s no longer the case that the United States will simply just protect us. Rather, Europe needs to take its fate into its own hands. That’s the task for the future.”

Meanwhile, the survey participants were also asked about whether Russia is a reliable partner, with more people (36%) viewing Moscow as trustworthy than Washington.
