Alwaght- North Korea has rejected US accusation that Pyongyang had cooperated with Syria on chemical weapons terming the claim a “preposterous fabrication”.
State run KCNA news agency cited a spokesman at the foreign ministry’s research institute of American studies arguing that the US made a “nonsensical argument” that it helped Syria produce chemical weapons.
“As we have clearly said several times, our republic does not develop, produce and stockpile chemical weapons and opposes chemical weapons themselves,” the spokesman said, via KCNA.
The New York Times reported earlier this week that a confidential 200-page report by a UN panel claimed that Pyongyang had shipped components for the creation of chemical weapons to Syria, including acid-resistant tiles, valves and thermometers.
“As has been elucidated several times, the DPRK (North Korea) does not have a single record of developing, producing and stockpiling a chemical weapon and it is opposed to chemical weapons”, KCNA quoted the ministry official as saying.
Syria itself has denied allegations of possessing chemical weapons, stressing that the foreign-backed Takfiri terrorist groups operating in the country, including al-Nusra and ISIS, have obtained some stocks.
Syria's Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva Hussam Edin Aala on Wednesday refuted the "false allegations" made by some countries against his government, saying, "Syria cannot possibly be using chemical weapons because it very simply has none in its possession."
In his address to the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Aala also denounced the use of chemical weapons anywhere.
