US-led War against ISIS without UNSC Mandate 'Mistake': Lavrov
Alwaght- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov portrayed the American-led coalition against ISIS terrorist group without UN Security Council mandate as a "mistake".
"Unfortunately, when the Americans announced this crusade against ISIL in Iraq and Syria(also known as ISIS), they never came to the Security Council, they just announced the coalition and they announced that the Iraqi government gave its consent," RT cited Lavrov as saying in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
"I believe it was a mistake. I think that just an obsession with the personality of Assad is not bringing any good to the common cause of fighting terrorism," Lavrov added.  " Those of the “outside players” have to decide what is a bigger threat: “the personality of Syrian president, or ISIL ".
He also added that Russia is not against the actions of so-called anti-ISISI coalition but bombardment of the terrorist-controlled areas of Syria without the consent of Syrian government is a mistake.
Stressing on the White House authorities' duplicity in painting Assad as an illegitimate partner, Russian foreign minister told “we always remind them that he was perfectly legitimate when we went to the Security Council to adopt the resolution of Syrian chemical weapons disarmament”.
Lavrov also emphasized that it is not up to US government to decide who should be in power in Syria, adding that "We certainly believe that only a political settlement is possible for Syria, and we also believe that the Geneva communiqué three years ago is the basis”.
The Russian foreign minister pointed to the fact that terrorists survive because they are supported by foreign players. “We want to cut the financial links of ISIL… We need to cut off any oil purchases on the territory controlled by the terrorists. I believe we need to take another step in Security Council and find a mechanism to find out who is buying this oil," he added.
Lavrov also warned that ISIS may backfire on its supporters, saying that that the terrorists may move “very far” away from Syria and Iraq.
