Alwaght-The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has condemned the desecration of Holy Qur’an verses in leaflets dropped by the US Army in the country.
In a statement released by the Office of the former President, Karzai strongly reacted at the airdrop of the offensive leaflets reportedly aimed at attracting the local support against the Taliban, calling it a psychological war against the Afghan people.
The “highly offensive” leaflet contained an image of a dog and the Taliban flag, which includes an Islamic verse.
Karzai strongly condemned the desecration of the holy verses of the Qur’an in the leaflets.
He said by distributing the offensive leaflets, the American forces have started to play with the emotions and thinking of the Afghan people.
Karzai said the presence of the American forces and the violations committed by them has resulted into the growing hatred among the people which is on the rise on daily basis.
The former Afghan President also warned the United States that the silence of the Afghan people should not be mistaken as their weakness.
A US military official Gen. James Linder admitted in a statement on Wednesday that “The design of the leaflets mistakenly contained an image highly offensive to both Muslims and the religion of Islam.”
He said an investigation would be held “to determine the cause of this incident and to hold the responsible party accountable.”
Friday prayers sermons across Afghanistan roundly condemned the US occupation forces in the country for desecrating verses of the Holy Qur’an.
The Taliban said the leaflet showed what they said was the American forces’ hatred of Islam, adding that Taliban fighters had carried out a suicide attack near the entrance to the Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, in revenge.
