ALWAGHT- The Kremlin stated on Sunday that the key takeaway from the phone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump was that Russia and the United States would now focus on discussions of peace rather than war.
“This is a strong message that we will now seek to resolve issues through dialogue,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state TV reporter Pavel Zarubin in a clip released on Sunday.
“From now on, our discussions will focus on peace, not war.”
Peskov emphasized the unique significance of the first meeting between Putin and Trump in the current context, noting that Western sanctions would not hinder Russia-US talks, as they could be lifted just as swiftly as they were imposed.
If this marks a genuine pivot toward peace talks, it raises several questions:
What specific issues will be addressed in these discussions? Will they focus on Ukraine, arms control, or broader geopolitical stability?
How will the US respond? While Russia is signaling openness to dialogue, Washington's stance may depend on its broader foreign policy strategy and domestic political landscape.
While Peskov claims sanctions can be lifted quickly, history shows that reversing economic measures often takes significant political effort and reciprocal actions.
