ALWAGHT- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasizes that Makran, the "Lost Paradise," should develop into Iran's future economic hub.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the importance of transforming the Makran coast into Iran’s future economic hub, highlighting its potential to drive regional growth. Speaking at the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Oman, he underscored Iran’s commitment to a “maritime-oriented” strategy, given its extensive coastline. He stressed that a strong maritime economy is essential, not optional, for Iran’s future, positioning its coasts as gateways to global economic integration. The Iranian government has devised a comprehensive plan to enhance ports, maritime transport, and regional supply chains to capitalize on these opportunities.
Araghchi outlined four key objectives for Makran’s development: strengthening local economies and employment, advancing renewable energy infrastructure, improving transportation networks, and attracting domestic and foreign investment. He asserted that sustainable energy is crucial for future economic competitiveness, while enhanced transit corridors will bolster regional trade. He also highlighted the necessity of investment to ensure long-term economic success. These efforts aim to elevate Makran from an overlooked region to a major economic center that benefits both Iran and the broader region.
Addressing security concerns, Araghchi stressed that economic growth depends on maritime stability. He reaffirmed Iran’s role in securing trade routes through anti-piracy operations and regional security collaborations while opposing interference from external powers. He urged regional nations to take control of their shared economic and security interests, resisting geopolitical rivalries imposed by global actors. Concluding his remarks, he praised Oman’s diplomatic role and called for stronger regional cooperation to replace division with economic development, marking a step toward a more interconnected and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
