Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, met with Falih al-Fayyadh, head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), to discuss regional developments and shared interests between Tehran and Baghdad. Ahmadian reaffirmed Iran’s strong support for Iraq, highlighting the close and brotherly ties between the two nations. The meeting also addressed common security threats facing both countries, particularly the resurgence of terrorist groups like ISIS.
Despite its defeat in Iraq and Syria, ISIS remnants continue to pose a threat, carrying out sporadic attacks. Iraq has warned of the group's potential resurgence, especially after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December. Al-Fayyadh emphasized Iraq’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and countering any hostile threats. Reports suggest that ISIS militants are active in multiple regions of Syria, with nearly half of their weaponry allegedly sourced from the US, raising concerns about secret arms supplies.
Following the fall of Assad’s government, armed groups, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), captured Damascus, enabling Israel to seize the buffer zone near the occupied Golan Heights. Israeli forces have since advanced deeper into Syria, conducting hundreds of airstrikes across the country. Meanwhile, American occupation forces have reportedly taken no action against Daesh, allowing the terrorist group to operate freely in large parts of Syria.
