ALWAGHT- Iran's leading human rights official has condemned the United Nations human rights office for accusing Iran of fabricated rights violations while ignoring the violent crackdown on anti-war students and academics in university campuses by the US government.
Kazem Gharibabadi, secretary of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, highlighted that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) remains silent on the developments in US university campuses, while it has issued statements regarding alleged rights violations in Iran during the same timeframe.
On Monday, Gharibabadi stated, 'While the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights remains oblivious to events in the US, it has concurrently released three statements condemning Iran for human rights violations. This inconsistency underscores the contradictions and double standards within the UN body's mechanisms.'
As of now, over 900 individuals have been detained on US campuses, as reported by the Washington Post on Monday. The report emphasized that demonstrations were initially "peaceful and nonviolent until law enforcement intervention."
During Monday's events, riot police deployed pepper spray and apprehended approximately 50 students at the University of Texas during a pro-Gaza protest encampment. These clashes between police and students on Monday marked the second instance in less than a week where state police were summoned to the campus.
Despite facing severe crackdowns, such as mass suspensions, evictions from university housing, and arrests, similar protests have emerged throughout the US. Videos have surfaced showing students, professors, and journalists being forcibly detained by police on various campuses.
