Alwaght- The Syrian civilians are the targets who suffer the most from the US and EU sanctions, a UN report says.
Parts of a UN reports along with some internal letters leaked to the media show that the international body believes the US and EU sanctions against Syria make aid work in the war-torn country almost impossible.
The UN's internal report titled as Humanitarian Impact of Syria-Related Unilateral Restrictive Measures was published in May but The Intercept got hold of it now.
According to the report, West-imposed sanctions have destabilized almost every sector of the economy in Syria that used to be self-sufficient before the war began in 2011.
These restrictions are “some of the most complicated and far-reaching sanctions regimes ever imposed".
The US and EU have made money transfer into Syria almost impossible, preventing aid groups from paying salaries and purchasing supplies “in both government and besieged areas,” the report said.
The final result was a creation of an informal money network mostly used by terrorist groups including the ISIS and al-Nusra Front.
An email text by “a key UN official” regards the sanctions responsible for crippling the Syrian health system.
The medication factories, which weren’t destroyed during the hostilities, still had to close due to absence of raw materials and foreign currency caused by the sanction, the official wrote.
