Alwaght- Egypt blocked The UN Security Council statement meant for condemning Turkey's failed military coup.
While statements by the 15-member Security Council have to be agreed by consensus, Egypt opposed the body's draft insisting on removal of the phrase that calls on all parties involved in Turkey crisis to "respect the democratically elected government of Turkey".
"We proposed different language that respects democratic and constitutional principles but the Americans refused to engage," Reuters cited Egypt's Ambassador to UN Amr Aboulatta as saying.
Cairo suggested that the council is "in no position to qualify, or label that government - or any other government for that matter - as democratically elected or not."
The US and the UK objection to the proposed change to the text changed Egypt’s tone as it proposed that the council call on the parties in Turkey to "respect the democratic and constitutional principles and the rule of law."
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that it was "surprised that its proposed amendment was not taken up, and with the claim that it is obstructing the release of the statement."
Turkey and Egypt ties turned sour in 2013 after Ankara sided with former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi as the then army chief launched a military coup to overthrow people elected president.
After Islamic Awakening (Arab Spring) Turkey and Qatar have provided huge support for Muslim Brotherhood across the region, in particular in Egypt.
