Egypt and Russia's Military Cooperation: A Tactic or Strategy

Alwaght-Egypt's proximity to Russia has attracted the attention of political circles since Al-Sisi's taking power. Since the era of Anvar Sadat, Egyptian Army was dependent on West, but Al-Sisi wants to alter the situation to some extent. It seems that he aims to get closer to Eastern powers, too. To achieve this goal, he traveled to Russia, responded by Russian Defense Minister's a couple of months ago.

Saudi Arabia was the main incentive of Al-Sisi's trip and signing a memorandum of understanding to buy equipment from Russia. Because Saudi is frustrated with America's policies toward Iran and Syria. Bandar bin Sultan tried to offer Kremlin officials, huge bribes to persuade them to change their policy on Syria during his visit to Moscow. In the meantime, it could be considered as a message to America's administration that if America continues the current policy, Saudi will get closer to Russia.

Egypt plans to diversify its military sources because America's Congress discussed 2.1 billion-dollar aid to this country many times. In addition, Congress officials have questioned the benefit of the aid and have requested to be reduced. Egypt wants to relieve or at least reduce the dependence on America through approaching Moscow.

UAE, Saudi and Egypt, as an influential axe in West Asia are following a same goal which is removing the Muslim Brotherhood's grassroots. Russia, faced with the threat of fundamentalism, approves this policy. Al-Sisi's trip can be considered in this context, too. In this regard, Egyptian president went to Jeddah at first and then went to Moscow, which means Cairo policy esteems from Jeddah.

It was reported that Russia has delivered S-300 missile system to Egypt. However, it is not determined against whom Egypt wants to use this system which seems that it is not  Israel, regarding Camp David Accords which was signed between Egypt and Israel in 1978. It is noteworthy that some experts believe that S-300 is not delivered to Egypt and this story is fabricated to be used as a political leverage against America.
