ALWAGHT- A car bombing in Moscow killed Russian Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, with authorities examining potential links to Ukraine.
A senior Russian military officer, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, was killed in a car bombing in Moscow, Russian authorities confirmed. Sarvarov, who headed the General Staff’s army operational training directorate, died from injuries sustained in the explosion. A criminal case has been opened, with investigators examining several scenarios, including the possibility of Ukrainian special services’ involvement, amid heightened security concerns in the capital.
The killing comes against the backdrop of previous high-profile assassinations inside Russia that Moscow has attributed to Ukrainian intelligence. Russian officials have cited past incidents, including the December 2024 killing of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov in Moscow, as part of what they describe as a broader campaign of targeted attacks by Ukraine’s security and military intelligence services since the war began in 2022.
At the same time, Russia’s Federal Security Service says it has thwarted numerous assassination and sabotage plots allegedly linked to Ukrainian intelligence. The FSB has reported foiling attempts to kill senior Russian defense officials, including an alleged plot in Crimea involving an explosive device placed in a personal vehicle, underscoring the expanding covert dimension of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
