ALWAGHT- Iran, Russia, and China have jointly informed the UN Secretary-General and Security Council President of the termination of Resolution 2231, the announcement was made by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s senior diplomat, discussed the country’s extensive diplomatic efforts regarding the termination of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 in a televised interview. He stated that Iran, along with Russia and China, maintains that the resolution has expired and that UN member states are no longer obligated to enforce related sanctions. Tehran has been actively countering what it describes as duplicity by Western countries and the United States, seeking international support for its legal interpretation.
Gharibabadi highlighted that at a recent Non-Aligned Movement Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Uganda, over 121 member states affirmed that Resolution 2231 would end on October 18. He also cited a statement by 21 members of the UN Charter Friends Group in New York, declaring that sanctions unilaterally re-imposed by the West and the US are legally invalid. Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a similar position, reinforcing Iran’s diplomatic efforts to secure broad international backing.
The diplomat added that an upcoming joint letter from Iran, China, and Russia will formally notify the UN Secretary-General and Security Council President of the resolution’s expiration and the nullity of associated sanctions. He noted that with the end of Resolution 2231, quarterly reporting by the IAEA on Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA will no longer be mandatory, marking a significant shift in the country’s international obligations under the agreement.
