ALWAGHT- The Iranian foreign minister described unilateralism as a major threat to international peace, security, and development, emphasizing the need for strengthened multilateral collaboration.
Abbas Araghchi, speaking at the High-Level Meeting of the Global Development Initiative in New York, emphasized that rising global uncertainties and widening divides in political and economic systems make the initiative increasingly essential. He described it as a platform for solidarity, cooperation, and collective action to create a brighter future for all nations.
Araghchi highlighted the persistent structural inequalities burdening developing countries in global economic, financial, and trade systems. He stressed that poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity remain pressing challenges, with the risk of famine growing in many regions.
The Iranian diplomat also expressed concern over digital divides, particularly in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. He called for inclusive, transparent, and fair governance of these technologies and structural reforms to ensure developing countries can participate fully and equally in global decision-making, criticizing unilateral measures and protectionist policies by some developed nations.
Araghchi connected these economic and technological issues to broader geopolitical challenges, citing ongoing crises in West Asia, including the situation in Gaza, as evidence of the failure to uphold international law. He reaffirmed Iran’s support for multilateral cooperation, rejecting unilateralism as a threat to global peace, security, and development, and underlined the role of the Global Development Initiative in advancing the interests of developing nations.
