ALWAGHT- Iranian and Russian foreign ministers stressed that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 should expire on schedule, criticized European efforts to prolong it, and highlighted their aligned views on nuclear diplomacy.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed developments on Iran’s nuclear issue during a Friday phone call, focusing on actions by three European countries ahead of the scheduled expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Both ministers criticized the European troika for failing to meet JCPOA obligations and aligning with the US against Iran’s nuclear program, arguing that this undermines their legal and moral authority to invoke the snapback mechanism to reinstate previously revoked UN resolutions. They emphasized that UNSCR 2231 should expire as planned.
Araghchi reiterated Iran’s position that decisions on extending the resolution fall within the UN Security Council’s authority. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing consultations and coordination to advance their shared positions on nuclear diplomacy.
