Armenia Vows to Uphold Iran Ties After Azerbaijan Deal

Armenia Vows to Uphold Iran Ties After Azerbaijan Deal

ALWAGHT- Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan says Yerevan is committed to fostering friendly, good-neighborly ties with Tehran grounded in mutual interests.

In a phone call with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan outlined recent developments, including the peace deal with Azerbaijan, agreements to reopen regional transport routes, and plans to boost connectivity. He emphasized Armenia’s friendship with Iran and its commitment to strong bilateral relations.

Araghchi welcomed the peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan but reiterated Iran’s concerns over transport projects, warning they must not trigger geopolitical shifts or hinder Iran’s access to regional corridors. He stressed that all decisions must respect national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the stability of surrounding countries. Mirzoyan acknowledged Iran’s principled stance and pledged to consider regional peace, stability, and mutual interests in transit-related decisions.

The call came after Armenia signed a deal in Washington granting the US exclusive rights to develop a corridor in the Syunik province—bordering Iran—to connect Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan. Iran has long opposed such a corridor, arguing it would alter the Southern Caucasus’ geopolitical balance and limit Iran’s access to regional transport networks.
