Gaza Genocide: Death Toll Nears 62,000 as Thousands of Missing are Presumed Dead

ALWAGHT- The government media office in Gaza has updated the death toll from Israel’s genocidal war on the besieged territory to 61,709.

Salama Marouf, head of the Gaza media office, reported on Sunday that the death toll from Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza has reached 61,709. This figure includes 14,222 individuals who were missing and are now presumed dead, in addition to the 47,487 bodies already transferred to hospitals. Among the victims, 17,881 are children, including 214 newborns. Over 38,000 Palestinian children have been orphaned, and more than 6,000 Palestinians have been detained, with many tortured to death in Israeli custody. The offensive has also led to the displacement of over 2 million Palestinians, many of whom have been forced to relocate multiple times with no access to essential services.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) highlighted the immense humanitarian needs in Gaza, calling for a full-scale humanitarian response involving all agencies. Meanwhile, Palestinian Civil Defense teams have recovered the bodies of 20 Palestinians, some of which were found decomposed or dismembered, from debris in northern Gaza. These actions are part of Israel’s devastating offensive on Gaza that began on October 7, 2023, following a historic operation by Hamas against Israel.

Although Israel was forced into a ceasefire agreement starting on January 19, 2025, due to its failure to achieve its military objectives, including freeing captives and eliminating Hamas, it has repeatedly violated the truce. Recently, a Palestinian citizen was killed by Israeli forces in the town of al-Shawka, and a woman and a girl succumbed to injuries sustained during Israeli airstrikes on Rafah. Despite the ceasefire, Israel’s violence against Palestinians in Gaza continues.
