ALWAGHT- The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson criticized the UK for rejecting UN reports that clearly hold the Israeli regime responsible for genocidal crimes in Gaza.
In a post on his X account on Sunday, Esmaeil Baqaei criticized the UK's rejection of the UN Special Committee's finding that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide. He emphasized that this conclusion merely reaffirms what has been repeatedly stated by other authoritative UN bodies, including United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, and warnings issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
"What is new, however, is the UK’s outrageous denial of an overt genocide," Baqaei remarked.
He referenced Albanese’s report, Anatomy of a Genocide (March 2024), which described Israel’s actions as part of a long-standing settler-colonial process of erasure, and another report, Genocide as Colonial Erasure (October 2024), which called the events in Gaza "the first live-streamed settler-colonial genocide," emphasizing that only justice can heal the wounds caused by political expedience.
Baqaei also pointed out that the UK's denial of genocide aligns with its government's ongoing support for Israel through the provision of weapons and political backing, making the UK complicit in the violence. He argued that this position violates the UK's international obligations under the Genocide Convention. Baqaei condemned this support as reflective of a colonial mentality, warning that it reflects growing anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia in Europe.
