Power Blackout Adds to Gaza Catastrophe Amid Ongoing Israeli Bombing

Power Blackout Adds to Gaza Catastrophe Amid Ongoing Israeli Bombing

Alwaght- Power blackout is adding to the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza as the enclave’s only power plant is running out of fuel as a result of the tightened Israeli blockade.

Hospitals are the mainly affected places in Gaza and they are running on power generators. In hospitals, the beeping of life-saving machines is, to many, also a reminder of increasingly perilous survival, reported Aljazeera.

In a statement to the media earlier on Wednesday, Ashraf Al Qidra, spokesperson of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, explained that Israel’s blockade and the refusal to allow fuel into Gaza are pushing “our medical operation into a precarious situation”.

Without quick action to restore power, the situation in the hospitals is poised for a “huge loss of these lives”, he said, a stark warning of the potential consequences of the continued power shortages.

The Israeli government announced “full siege" on the Gaza Strip on Sunday following a Hamas operation that killed nearly 1,000 Israelis and injured more than 2,000 in response to continued Israeli killing of Palestinians in the West Bank.

The UN warned that a catastrophe is unfolding. The Israelis have already killed over 1,000 Palestinians as their airstrikes keep hammering the coastal enclave as the world’s most densely populated point.

At least 11 employees working with the UN’s Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) have been killed in Gaza airstrikes since Saturday, according to the agency.

“Citizens need protection,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesdau, adding “we want to see a humanitarian corridor.”
