Alwaght- A Turkish opposition party says it is seeking to meet the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to discuss bilateral relations.
The Good Party says it is asking the foreign ministry for a green light for meeting the Syrian leader.
Khurshed Zurlu, the spokesman for the party, said that the meeting is aimed at discussing terrorism in northern Syria and the challenge of Syrian refugees hosted by Turkey.
“We are following this issue and we want, as soon as possible, to get away from this image of our country, which we are so concerned about,” Turkish Cumhuriyet newspaper cited the spokesman as referring to global picture of Turkey as being a supporter of militias in Syria.
Recently, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been expressing his will to normalize ties with the Syrian government.
Several times, Erdogan said he was ready to meet al-Assad “when time is right.”
Turkey has already taken steps towards normalization, including closing down the Russian opposition offices on its soil.
Turkey cut off ties with Syria in March 2012 and pushed, along with the West and Persian Gulf Arab monarchies, to topple al-Assad using terrorist militias from a number of countries.
However, the Turkish policy began to change as Damascus forces, assisted by allies, retook from terrorist groups the territory it lost to them in the early years of conflict.
