Alwaght- Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles at the position of the ISIS terrorist group in Syria, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced. The missiles were fired from the Caspian Sea.
“Four missile ships launched 26 cruise missiles at 11 targets. According to objective control data, all the targets were destroyed. No civilian objects sustained damage,” Shoigu said.
According to RT, the missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, which borders Russia, Iran and three other littoral countries. The precision weapons hit all intended targets. The attacks required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria.
The Russian Defense Ministry said it had worked with its partners to plan the flight path so that the missiles traveled only over desolate areas and didn’t pose any danger to civilians.
Meanwhile Russia’s President Vladimir Putin says the country’s Air Force, which has been bombing the positions of the militants in Syria, will support Syrian government forces fighting on the ground.
Russian efforts “will be synchronized with the actions of the Syrian army on the ground and the actions of our air force will effectively support the offensive operation of the Syrian army,” Putin said in televised comments on Wednesday.
Elsewhere Syria's army and allied forces, backed up by the Russian Air Force, have launched a major ground operation in the western parts of the country.
“The Syrian army and allied forces began a ground operation in the northern parts of Hama Province ... with fire cover from the Russian air force,” a Syrian military source said on Wednesday.
The Syrian military source went on to say that the operation in Hama would target “the edges of the villages of Latmeen, west of Morek, in preparation for heading towards Kafr Zeita.”
Russia started its military campaign against terrorists in Syria on September 30 following a request by the Syrian Damascus government. The Russian Parliament, Duma, has also approved the country's military operation in Syria.
