Alwaght-Over 60 Britons have been killed while fighting for the ISIS terrorist group in Iraq and Syria since 2002.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the figure, confirmed by government sources in London, is twice that reported last year and suggests a sharp increase in the rate of British fighters killed in the service of the ISIS terrorist group.
Experts say the new death toll means that nearly one in 10 of the estimated 700 British jihadists who have gone to Syria has been killed or has killed themselves in suicide attacks since the conflict started drawing in British foreign fighters in 2012.
The British defense minister Michael Fallon had revealed earlier that the British government is considering to launch air strikes on ISIS terrorist strongholds in Syria.
In April this year, the EU Commissioner for Justice reported that between 5,000 and 6,000 Europeans have traveled to Syria to join ISIS adding that 1,450 of them are French citizens.
The EU officials believe that “the figures are strongly under-estimated,” as foreign fighters are hard to keep track of.
The EU nationals traveling to Syria cause authorities’ concern, as the European governments fear they may return and carry out attacks on home soil.
The conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 230,000 lives up until now.
Recently the United Nations reported that fighters from 100 nations – more than half the countries in the world – have joined terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS.
Worryingly, the report warned if ISIS was defeated in the war-torn region then the barbarous foreign fighters could be scattered across the world
The violence fuelled by foreign-backed terrorists has also forced over 3.8 million Syrians to take refuge in neighboring countries, namely Jordan and Lebanon. More than 7.2 million others have been displaced within Syria, according to the UN.
Syria blames some foreign governments especially the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and the Israeli regime of being the main backers of terrorists attempting to overthrow the country’s legitimate government.
