Alwaght- Iran and Russia have strongly condemned the US-led missile strikes against Syria, saying the aggression will have dangerous consequences.
In a statement early Saturday, Iran strongly condemned the military strikes by the US, the UK and France against Syria terming the aggression a violation of international law, warning against the repercussions of such an act of aggression against an independent country.
“The aggression is a flagrant violation of international law and a disregard of Syria’s right to national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in statement.
“Based on religious, legal and ethical regulations, Iran opposes any use of chemical weapons, but at the same time, strongly rejects and condemns the fabrication of excuses to invade an independent country,” the statement read.
Iran also held the US and its allies accountable for the regional and extra-regional consequences of the military attack that launched against “without any evidence or proven document” their claims of a chemical attack by Damascus.
The statement further called on international organizations and bodies to firmly condemn the “arbitrary and unilateral” military attacks against a United Nations member state, which run contrary to international regulations and the UN Charter.
Iran “roundly condemns” such acts of aggression, which undermine global peace and strengthens terrorism and extremism in the region, said the statement.
Russia has warned against the repercussions of the Saturday missile strikes by the US and its allies on Syria, saying the tripartite military attacks targeted the terrorism-riddled country’s chance for a peaceful future.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova took to Facebook to condemn the act of aggression, saying, “The capital of a sovereign government, trying for years to survive under terrorist aggression, has been attacked.”
“You have to be quite abnormal to attack Syria’s capital just at the moment when it had a chance for a peaceful future.”
"First, the Syrian people was subjected to Arab Spring, then Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL], now to 'smart' American missiles. A strike was carried out on the capital of a sovereign state, which for many years has been trying to survive under the threat of terror,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said. Zakharova also accused the American and other mainstream media of inciting the attack, noting that the White House's decision to launch a strike was based on media reports, photo and video shared on the Internet and spread online.
The missile strike against Syria’s military and civilian infrastructures was carried out by US planes and naval ships in cooperation with British and French air forces early on Saturday.
The United States, Britain and France said the strikes were a response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria’s Douma. The government of Syria has vehemently denied involvement in the alleged attack.
According to some sources, approximately ten targets were attacked. The Syrian news agency SANA does not confirm this information. The Pentagon said twice as many weapons were fired as in April 2017 against the Shayrat airbase.
