Alwaght- The European Union on Friday warned the Israeli regime over its plans to construct thousands of new settlement units, including in the West Bank.
“Israel's continued policy of settlement expansion is illegal under international law” and the recent decision “further complicate the prospects for viable two-state solution”, the bloc’s foreign police chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement on Friday.
“The EU calls on both sides to engage in a meaningful process in view of reaching a negotiated two-state solution, and reiterates its readiness to support them, together with its international and regional partners,” the statement said.
“This is the only way to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of both parties and to achieve just and lasting peace,” it noted.
A few days ago the Israeli regime approved construction of approximately 1,800 new settlements in the West Bank.
There are about 400,000 Zionists living in the occupied West Bank in settlements with the Israeli regime continued to expand them despite being considered illegal under international law.
Last December, in an unprecedented move, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding an end to the construction of illegal Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territories with the US abstained from voting.
The resolution called on Israeli regime to "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
It also said the construction of Israeli settlements has "no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law."
In April, The United Nations Secretary-General Antoni Guterres said he was disappointed and alarmed by Israel's decision to build settlements on the land the Palestinians seek for a state and has condemned the move.
