ALWAGHT- Senior diplomats from Iran and Bahrain met in Tehran to initiate the restoration of political relations between the two neighboring countries.
Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, traveled to Tehran to participate in the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) meeting and held discussions with Iran's Caretaker Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri, on Sunday.
According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the meeting was conducted "within the framework of historical, brotherly, and religious ties, neighborhood, common history, and mutual interests" between the two nations.
"During the meeting, both sides agreed to establish the necessary mechanisms to initiate talks on the resumption of political relations," the ministry stated.
Bahrain had severed diplomatic ties with Iran in January 2016, following Saudi Arabia's lead. The rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, mediated by China in March 2023, has led to subsequent discussions between Tehran and Manama on reopening their embassies.
