ALWAGHT- According to UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini, hunger is causing agency personnel, doctors, and humanitarian workers in Gaza to collapse amid Israel’s total aid blockade and continued assault.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini warned that hunger and exhaustion are forcing aid workers, doctors, journalists, and other caretakers in Gaza to collapse while trying to perform their duties. He said no one is spared from the dire humanitarian crisis, as the region suffers under Israel’s total blockade and ongoing military aggression. UNRWA has received dozens of emergency messages from staff describing unbearable conditions on the ground.
Lazzarini condemned the Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), calling its aid distribution scheme a “sadistic death trap.” According to him, snipers have been firing on desperate civilians attempting to reach food aid, with over 1,000 people killed since the end of May. He also criticized the GHF for bypassing UN systems and operating without transparency, noting that UN agencies cannot verify its claims about aid delivery.
Since May 27, thousands more Palestinians have been killed or wounded by Israeli gunfire near GHF sites. Reports from Israeli media indicate that Israeli forces were ordered to fire on unarmed aid seekers. The UN and humanitarian organizations accuse the GHF of politicizing aid and enabling Israel’s alleged efforts to depopulate Gaza. In the last 24 hours alone, 15 people — including four children — have died from starvation, as the US-Israeli campaign continues, with a death toll exceeding 59,000 Palestinians and over 142,500 wounded since October 2023.
