Saudi-led Strikes in Yemen Breaches International Law: UN

Saudi-led Strikes in Yemen Breaches International Law: UN

Alwaght- Johannes van der Klaauw, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen said on Saturday, Saudi-led coalition against Yemen has permanently violated international law.

In a statement, Johannes van der Klaauw said, "The indiscriminate bombing of populated areas, with or without prior warning, is in contravention of international humanitarian law (IHL),", Reuters reported.

However, under international law, all parties to a conflict must avoid inflicting harm upon civilians.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Roth, the Executive Director of Human Rights Watch described crimes of the Saudi-led aggression on Yemen as those of Israel when dealing with civilians as legitimate targets.

“The Saudi wars in Yemen are similar to those of Israel when it comes to attacking civilians as legitimate targets if they do not leave their areas,” Roth said on his Facebook page.

In a 24-hour period, 130 Saudi-led airstrikes have targeted schools and hospitals.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF), one of the international aid organizations with a presence in Saada, confirmed the rained down of missiles in Yemen beginning from Friday into Saturday, CNN reported.

Llanos Ortiz, MSF medical coordinator in Yemen also believes, "The bombing of civilian targets, with or without warning, is a serious violation of international humanitarian law" adding, "It is even more serious to target a whole province."

Van der Klaauw said, "Many civilians are effectively trapped in Saada as they are unable to access transport, because of the fuel shortage. The targeting of an entire governorate will put countless civilians at risk," as Reuters reported.

The coalition, which includes Saudi Arabia and nine other Arab countries and is backed by the United States, Britain and France, declared the entire governorate of Sanaa as a military target, he said.

During last month-and-a-half of criminally bombing Yemen’s infrastructure by Saudi-led coalition, over1256 civilians mostly children were killed and forced to flee their homes.
