Alwaght- A number of international human rights groups called on British prime minister to pressure Bahraini regime to end its violating human rights.
Groups including the Human Rights Watch asked British leader to raise the issue of human rights violations and crackdown on the opposition during her upcoming visit to the Persian Gulf country.
British Prime Minister, Theresa May is supposed to attend the next meeting of the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council (P)GCC.
Issuing a statement on Sunday the groups told May "If your government is serious about its commitment to encouraging reform and dialogue, you should use this influence to press the government of Bahrain to put an immediate stop to this repression."
British PM, on the other hand, rejected the pressure calls despite accepting the severity of crackdowns, claiming that such problems could only be resolved through engagement “with these countries and working with them to encourage and support their plans for reform.”
London has been a big supporter of Manama in recent years rejecting all calls, even from its own MPs to stop arming the country amid escalating human rights violations and violence against the opposition.
Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country on February 14, 2011. The protesters demand that the Al Khalifah dynasty relinquish power.
Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others sustained injuries or got arrested as a result of the regime’s crackdown.
