Joined Egypt-Saudi Arabia Maneuver in Bab Al-Mandib: Purposes and Implications

Alwaght- The Yemeni people has succeeded in freeing their country from foreign-dependence and expelling the corrupt pyramid of power. However, Saudi Arabia is far from being pleased. It is determined to restore the situation that dominated Yemen before September 21, 2014, when the People Committees led by Ansarullah Movement entered Sanaa, in order to put an end to the tragedy in Yemen.

The military representative declared on behalf of the Egyptian Armed Forces the implementation of the main stage of the joined Morgan 15 Marine Maneuvers between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the Saudi waters of the Red Sea. The maneuver is determined to last few days.

The maneuver includes the participation of several marine units, Special Forces, exploration aircraft, and combating submarines.

The Egyptian army said in a statement on Saturday 14th of February that the exercises include addressing the risk of speedboats that might encounter commercial ships in shipping lanes and how to address them; intercepting suspected ships; and training on the tasks of finding submarines, monitoring, tracking enemy air targets, and destroying them.

Moreover, this maneuver comes within a series of joint naval, air, and land between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in order to develop the capability to participate in planning and managing joint operations. The purpose is to maintain the security and the safety of navigation in the Red Sea against any threat, due to its regard as an important international conduit for the global economy.

The alliance between Saudi Arabia and Egypt certainly brings a number of gains, especially for Egypt. For instance, the former will be funding arm deals on behalf of Egypt including those signed with Moscow. Moreover, other Persian Gulf countries have expressed their willingness to finance deals for arms and fuel on the behalf of Egypt.

It is important to note that these exercises coincide with the last warning made by Egypt against the Ansarullah Movement in Yemen on approaching Bab Al-Mandib. Egyptian Security Officials declared that there is an Egyptian-Saudi coordination for a joint military response to deal with any future possibilities in Yemen.

The Associated Press announced that Egypt has prepared SWAT team that would interfere if the Ansarullah Movement threatened the strategic shipping lanes in the Red Sea. This was a reaction to the success of the Ansarullah Movement in having strict control over the strategic Al-Hadeeda port in south of Yemen.

Ansarullah refused on Monday the decision of the UN Security Council to withdraw from the controlled institutions in the Yemeni capital, and the house arrest for President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Prime Minister Khaled Bahah.

The movement said in statement: “the Revolution Committee requests that the Council should respect the will of the Yemeni people and its sovereignty.” They have highlighted their refusal of the International decision; where it was perceived as an adoption of the position of countries working on bombarding a conflict among the Yemeni people with their negative attitudes, support and funding of terrorist groups. They have also requested the initiation of negotiations to exit the present crisis.

Moreover, the movement added that: “the revolution’s procedures done are not intended against the brothers in the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC), not at the present time, nor in the future.”

On the other hand, PGCC requested the United Nations to issue a decision under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which allows the use of force in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia could not comprehend any role for Ansarullah Movement in the Yemeni revolution. It tried to exclude the movement from the beginning as part of a “Gulf Initiative”. So they described the revolution as “sectarian” and a “Sunni-Shiite conflict,” as in the case in Iraq, Syria, Bahrain, and Lebanon.

So, the Persian Gulf Arab media, led by Saudi Arabia, violently stormed the Yemeni scene, describing the September 21st event as “coup”, and a “bloody struggle” between “the Shiite Ansarullah Movement” and “the Sunni tribes”. Their media’s purpose was to destroy any effort to unite the Yemeni people under a national umbrella. It aimed to destroy any will to stand against foreign interference including Arab countries.

According to Associated Press Agency, Yemeni Officials announced that Saudi Arabia is sending weapons and money to Yemeni pro-Qaeda tribes in Maareb Province, northern Yemen, in order to support them against the army and Ansarullah.

Yemeni media sources declared that Saudi Arabia is working on supporting and arming Al-Islah Party (Reform Party) and Wahhabi forces – including Al-Qaeda, in order to initiate a wide-spectrum war against Ansarullah, the Yemeni army and the revolutionary forces in the capital and a number of provinces.

Saudi Arabia has also restored contact with Al-Ahmar leader through General Ali Mohsen Al-Ahmar, the former commander of the First Armored Division, who is acting vigorously to achieve Saudi reconciliation with the Sheikhs of the Hashid tribe of Al-Ahmar’s leaders.

These Saudi attempts resulted in: the control of Ansar Al-Shareaa (Al-Qaeda) on the 19th Pedestrian Brigade camp in Bihan in the province of Shabwa. The organization published photographs of its units in the camp and a number of Brigade’s soldiers who were captured. According to France Press, the equipment that was looted from the camp included 30 tanks, 90 military vehicles, 25 armored ones, and 28 cannons.

Other results of this policy included violent clashes between the two parties in the Al-Baydaa province leading to the death of 16 members of the Ansarullah Movement, as well as 10 members of the Al-Qaeda fighters.

In Saudi and British media, the terrorists of Al-Qaeda fighters and Salafists turned out to be Sunni tribes fighting the Shiite Ansarullah Movement backed up by the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is an old tone played over and over again wherever there is Shiites (Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Bahrain).

With respect to International relations, just as Libya ended up as a failed state, and Syria still struggling for the fourth year in devastating war, the same disastrous situation is waiting Yemen if the Persian Gulf countries and the urgency on the Western countries to militarily intervene.

All evidences show that Saudi Arabia is willing to repeat the Syrian scenario in Yemen; however, they will not be able to do that. The Yemeni people are aware of the lies that the Persian Gulf Arab media is posing, and they will not fall in the same trap. In addition, Al-Qaeda branch in Yemen, does not represent the Yemeni people. It is still an outsider; despite all the financial, military, media, moral, intellectual and religious support received from Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states
