Alwaght- The Lebanese army bombarded Wadi Rafik near Arsal on the border with Syria on Tuesday, according to the state-run National News Agency.
This comes as the country’s army continues to confront terrorist groups that have infested Lebanon’s eastern front, edging war-ravaged Syria.
Just on Monday, the army retaliated to shelling from the ISIS terrorist group that has infiltrated Lebanon from the neighbouring state battling through a 5-year conflict— on the outskirts of the north-eastern border town of Arsal,
“Army posts in Ras Baalbek have come under mortar fire from the militants of the ISIS group who are stationed in the eastern outskirts and the army has responded forcefully,” NNA reported.
Lebanese news stations, meanwhile, said the army was using heavy artillery in its shelling.
Before this attack, the army’s Fifth Intervention Regiment had targeted an al-Nusra Front post in the Dahr al-Safa area, destroying it completely.
A day earlier, 8 suspects were arrested during raids in the town.
The army questioned the individuals who were detained during a raid on the residence of Hasan Hujeiri, a wanted murderer— suspected of belonging to a terrorist organization.
Such measures are taken by the Lebanese army to prevent ISIS and al-Nusra Front terrorists, entrenched in areas along the Syrian-Lebanese border, from further spreading their presence in the country. They are also cracking down on militant posts to avert another battle that the area witnessed in 2014 when army checkpoints were surrounded by militants who stormed the town, captured 16 policemen and two soldiers, and killed no less than 10 soldiers in confrontations.
