ALWAGHT- The spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said a motion to charge ships for receiving services in the Strait of Hormuz has been approved.
Iran’s Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission approved Article 3 of a strategic plan aimed at ensuring security and progress in the Strait of Hormuz. Under the provision, ships authorized to transit the strait would be charged fees for maritime, environmental, fueling, insurance, safety, and other services provided by Iran.
Commission spokesman Hassan Qashqavi said the fees could be collected in Iranian rials or another currency designated by Iran. He also stressed the need to protect the rights and sovereignty of the Strait of Hormuz’s littoral states, arguing that freedom of navigation must be balanced with the security and sovereignty of coastal countries.
