ALWAGHT- Iraq’s PMF, alongside the army, launches a major operation in the Nineveh desert targeting ISIS remnants.
The Popular Mobilization Forces launched a large-scale security operation in the Nineveh desert on Monday, coordinating with Iraqi army units from five axes. Led by the Nineveh Operations Command, the campaign aims to dismantle sleeper cells, prevent hostile movements, and strengthen security in desert regions, with support from engineering, medical, and intelligence units.
The offensive is part of ongoing preemptive measures by Iraqi security forces to disrupt ISIS networks. Recent arrests include senior ISIS figures such as Abu Ayman al-Rawi in Anbar and a high-ranking field commander who had infiltrated Mosul from Syria, highlighting the continued threat of the group across northern Iraq and eastern Syria.
The surge in ISIS activity in neighboring Syria has intensified urgency, with fighter numbers reportedly rising from 2,000 to 10,000 in just over a year. Iraq has also taken custody of over 5,700 detainees transferred from Syrian facilities, while reinforcing border security and deploying PMF brigades to prevent cross-border threats, ensuring control over national territory.
