Kiev Holds Talks with The US In Switzerland on A Potential Peace Agreement

ALWAGHT- Ukraine’s Zelensky-approved delegation includes senior defense officials responsible for negotiating potential terms to end the war.

Ukraine is set to begin consultations with the United States in Switzerland to discuss potential terms for ending the war, a senior Ukrainian security official announced. National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov confirmed that high-ranking officials from both countries will explore the parameters of a possible peace agreement, highlighting Kiev’s appreciation for the US’s readiness for substantive talks. The Ukrainian delegation, approved by President Zelensky, will be led by his chief of staff and include senior defense and security officials tasked with defending Ukraine’s interests.

President Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine seeks peace but will safeguard its legitimate interests and the foundations of European security. The Ukrainian delegation has been given clear negotiation guidelines to ensure that any discussions protect national sovereignty while exploring avenues for a peaceful resolution. Umerov later clarified that European partners will not participate in these talks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed cautious optimism regarding former US President Donald Trump’s 28-point peace proposal, suggesting it could serve as a foundation for a final settlement if Ukraine and its Western allies engage in serious dialogue. The plan includes reducing US military aid, granting state status to the Russian language in Ukraine, recognizing the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, limiting Ukraine’s armed forces, and prohibiting foreign troops and long-range weapons on Ukrainian soil.

Putin noted that Russia is ready for substantive negotiations on the proposal, but accused Ukraine of refusing detailed discussions, citing Kiev’s disconnect from battlefield realities. He warned that without dialogue, escalations similar to recent events in Kupyansk could recur. Moscow has indicated willingness to adapt the plan where necessary, stressing that the current version emerged after Ukraine rejected earlier iterations, temporarily stalling negotiations.
